  41.                            ABOUT LIVEUPDATE
  42. **********************************************************************
  43. LiveUpdate is the Symantec technology that permits an installed
  44. Symantec product to connect to a Symantec server automatically for
  45. program and virus definitions updates.  The connection is primarily made 
  46. through an Internet connection. LiveUpdate can also be configured to 
  47. use a local network server as bandwidth requires (for corporate customers).  
  48. To do this, download the LiveUpdate 
  49. Administration Utility at:

  55.                               WHAT'S NEW
  56. **********************************************************************

  58. Symantec LiveUpdate BBS's:
  59. Symantec has discontinued the use of LiveUpdate BBS's as of 
  60. LiveUpdate 1.5.3.9.
  61.  
  62. One Button Update:
  63. LiveUpdate 1.5 now has the ability to retrieve and install updates for 
  64. multiple Symantec products simultaneously.  Many Symantec products released 
  65. after February 1999 contain this feature.
  66.  
  67. Download Resumption:
  68. LiveUpdate can resume interrupted transfers transparently.  If you've 
  69. ever had a download interrupted by call-waiting or internet problems, you'll
  70. appreciate this new feature.  
  71.  
  72. Download resumption is available for the HTTP transport only.
  73. It is not available for the FTP transport or for the LAN transport 
  74. (corporate customers only).
  75.  
  76. Proxy Servers:
  77. Most internet users don't need to configure their computers to use a proxy 
  78. server, but we've made it easier then ever via a new Proxy tab in the
  79. LiveUpdate Control Panel.
  80.  
  81. Note: If you do not know what a proxy server is, it may be best to set options
  82.       using the Proxy tab only when instructed to do so by a network 
  83.       administrator.
  84.  
  85. To configure LiveUpdate to use a proxy server, simply select the Proxy tab 
  86. and put a checkmark in "Connect through a Proxy Server".  By default, 
  87. LiveUpdate will use your Internet Explorer Proxy Settings (if available), 
  88. but you can easily specify your own custom settings for both FTP and HTTP.

  90. * Note: LiveUpdate now uses HTTP by default.  
  91.  
  92. If your proxy server requires authorization for outside access, you can also 
  93. enter a Username and Password for either FTP or HTTP (or both) proxy access.  
  94. Please note that this is different from the username and password you use to 
  95. connect to your Internet Service Provider (if you use one).  
  96.  
  97. Certain networks are configured only to allow FTP to use a "passive 
  98. connection".  If you have difficulty using the FTP transport, check the
  99. box on the Internet tab of the LiveUpdate control panel labeled "Use Passive 
  100. mode FTP transfers".
  101.  
  102. If you have any difficulty configuring your proxy settings, contact your 
  103. network administrator for assistance.  Each network is different, so 
  104. only they can help you with this step.

  108.                               VERSION INFO

  111. To determine the exact version of the LiveUpdate Client that you have 
  112. installed, open Windows Explorer and after browsing to s32live1.dll,
  113. located  in the LiveUpdate client installation folder 
  114. (\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate), right click on this file and select
  115. Properties. On the Version tab the File version information will be listed.

  119.                            RUNNING LIVEUPDATE
  120. **********************************************************************
  121.  
  122. Most Symantec products which use LiveUpdate offer a LiveUpdate button.  
  123. In Norton SystemWorks, for example, you can run LiveUpdate from the 
  124. SystemWorks Integrator.  You can also run LiveUpdate from the LiveUpdate 
  125. Control Panel. This will automatically download updates for all Symantec 
  126. products which use our One Button Update technology (discussed above).

  130.                           UPDATING LIVEUPDATE
  131. **********************************************************************
  132.  
  133. Sometimes even the update program needs an update.  LiveUpdate will
  134. automatically check to see if there are any available updates to 
  135. itself each time it is run.  It should update itself transparently 
  136. (without any extra input), but in certain rare cases may require that
  137. you run LiveUpdate one additional time to complete your session 
  138. after it has finished its update.  If this is required, it will tell
  139. you.

  143.                    INSTALLING/UNINSTALLING LIVEUPDATE
  144. **********************************************************************
  145.  
  146. All Symantec products which use LiveUpdate install it themselves, but
  147. if you encounter a problem with LiveUpdate that you or Technical 
  148. Support believe to be the result of an install problem or corrupted
  149. files, you can reinstall easily.
  150.  
  151. To reinstall, locate LUSETUP.EXE on your system or download the latest 
  152. version from the Internet at:
  153.  
  154. ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/liveupdate/updates/
  155.  
  156. Once the file is on your system, double click the icon.  You will be 
  157. asked if you wish to install LiveUpdate.  Answer yes, and it will 
  158. automatically reinstall.  Your previous settings will be saved,
  159. and you will still be able to run LiveUpdate from any Symantec product
  160. without further configuration.
  161.  
  162. If you wish to uninstall LiveUpdate, please note that you will no
  163. longer be able to receive updates to your Symantec products.  Your
  164. configuration information will also be removed so that when you reinstall,
  165. you may need to re-configure custom proxy settings or connection info.
  166.  
  167. To uninstall LiveUpdate:
  168.  
  169. 1. From the Start menu, select Settings > Control Panel.
  170.  
  171. 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.  
  172.  
  173. 3. Select LiveUpdate from the list, then click Add/Remove.
  174.  
  175. To reinstall LiveUpdate at any time, find the LUSETUP.EXE
  176. at the above URL and simply double-click it.

  180.                       USING AOL (America Online)
  181. **********************************************************************

  189. An important issue in configuring LiveUpdate to work with AOL is to first 
  190. make sure you are using a Windows 95/98 version of the AOL 4.0 software.  
  191. Many free CD's that AOL ships do not contain this version, but the 
  192. Windows 3.x version instead.  While that version can be run under Win 95 
  193. or 98, it will not provide you with the necessary 32 bit Internet 
  194. connection that is required by LiveUpdate.
  195.  
  196. To check this, go to the HELP menu in your AOL software, and choose the
  197. ABOUT option.  If the screen does not say that it is a version for
  198. Win 95/98, then you have the incorrect AOL software installed.
  199.  
  200. You can download the latest Win 95/98 version of the AOL software directly
  201. from AOL by going to this web page:

  205. Once you have verified the correct AOL software is installed, you may
  206. follow these steps to get LiveUpdate to work with an AOL connection.
  207.  
  208. Note: if you are using AOL to connect to the Internet via your modem, 
  209. LiveUpdate requires that a TCP/IP connection be established prior to
  210. launching LiveUpdate. Note that Symantec is not liable for any phone 
  211. charges incurred when making this dial up connection.
  212.  
  213. 1) Update to the latest release of LiveUpdate.  Normally, LiveUpdate
  214. will automatically update itself.  However, following the instructions 
  215. in the section above titled "INSTALLING/UNINSTALLING LIVEUPDATE" will
  216. ensure that you have the most current version of LiveUpdate.
  217.  
  218. 2) Click on the START button on your desktop, then select SETTINGS, and
  219. then CONTROL PANEL.  Then double click on the LiveUpdate icon.  On the
  220. CONNECTION tab, make sure that the option to connect to LiveUpdate is set
  221. to INTERNET.
  222.  
  223. 3) Next, click on the INTERNET tab.  UNCHECK the option to "Connect to 
  224. the Internet with a modem".  If you do that, then LiveUpdate will 
  225. automatically use your already opened Internet connection.  
  226.  
  227. 4) Sign on to your AOL account. The AOL software will dial your AOL
  228. access phone number and make the Internet connection.
  229.  
  230. 5) Once connected, launch LiveUpdate from your Symantec software, and be
  231. sure that you select the INTERNET option.  The software will then detect
  232. your already opened AOL connection, and use it to download any needed
  233. Symantec software updates.

  237.                        USING IBM GLOBAL NETWORK
  238. **********************************************************************
  239.  
  240. If you are already online with your IBM Global Network service you do
  241. not need to follow these instructions. The following information 
  242. only applies if:
  243.  
  244. 1) You wish to use an IBM Global Network to connect to the Internet 
  245. 2) You are not on-line when a LiveUpdate session is started
  246.  
  247. If you are using the IBM Global Network Dial-Up Networking client to 
  248. establish an Internet connection to enable LiveUpdate to connect
  249. to the Symantec LiveUpdate servers, you are required to have the 
  250. following settings:
  251.  
  252. 1) From the Control Panel double-click on the LiveUpdate icon to open
  253.    the LiveUpdate Settings Applet
  254. 2) Select the Internet tab
  255. 3) Enable "Connect to the Internet using a modem"
  256. 4) Within the "Use the Dial-Up Networking connection" select 'IBM Global 
  257.    Network'
  258. 5) Within the "User Name" field enter first the "Account" followed by 
  259.    either a period, "." or "\" and then the "User ID". 
  260.    Both the IBM Global Network Account and User ID should have been 
  261.    provided to you by IBM Global Network
  262.  
  263.                       i.e. Username: myaccount.myusername
  264.                            Password: mypassword
  265.  
  266. 6) In the "Password" field enter the password as provided to you by IBM 
  267.    Global Network

  271.                              ISDN SUPPORT
  272. **********************************************************************

  282.                         TECHNICAL INFORMATION
  283. **********************************************************************
  284.  
  285. LiveUpdate uses three possible methods for retrieving updates and 
  286. installing them.
  287.  
  288. 1.  HTTP
  289.  
  290. We now use HTTP to download files from the Internet.  This replaces
  291. FTP as our primary method for the following reasons.
  292.  
  293.  a: With the advent of the World-Wide-Web, HTTP is more widely used
  294.     than FTP. More Internet Service Providers and corporations
  295.     are configured to allow unrestricted HTTP transfers than FTP.
  296.     This reduces the likelihood that you will need to configure 
  297.     LiveUpdate manually.
  298.  
  299.  b: Through switching to HTTP, LiveUpdate now offers Download
  300.     Resumption via the Internet.  If a LiveUpdate transfer is
  301.     interrupted because of a severed connection to the internet
  302.     (due to line noise or call waiting, for example) or merely
  303.     canceled, it can be continued the next time LiveUpdate is run.
  304.  
  305.  c: HTTP is slightly faster than FTP.  Also, if the file that
  306.     LiveUpdate uses to determine the availability of updates has
  307.     not changed since the last time it was run, LiveUpdate can
  308.     now detect it and avoid re-transferring it. This will make
  309.     your LiveUpdate sessions faster than before.
  310.  
  311. 2.  FTP
  312.  
  313. FTP is the backbone of file transfers on the Internet.  If LiveUpdate
  314. is unable connect via HTTP, it will attempt to use the old FTP method
  315. automatically.  FTP does not offer download resumption. Corporate
  316. customers may need to configure LiveUpdate to use an FTP proxy or 
  317. to use FTP in passive mode (as discussed above), but
  318. the updates it downloads are identical to those retrieved via HTTP.

  320. 3.  LAN (Local Area Network)
  321.  
  322. Corporate customers may wish to create their own internal LiveUpdate
  323. servers to ease bandwidth usage.  For more information on this,
  324. download the LiveUpdate Administration tool referenced earlier in 
  325. this document.

  327. In addition to the previous three transports mentioned, corporate
  328. customers may configure a network server to provide the updates
  329. using a standard file copy operation.  This may be faster and easier
  330. to configure than FTP or HTTP.  More information about the LAN
  331. transport is available from within the LiveUpdate Administration
  332. Utility.
